Habits That Make Anxiety Worse

Anxiety disorders are legitimate medical illnesses, just like high blood pressure or diabetes. In the United States, anxiety disorders are the most frequent and widespread mental disorders.

Moving to a new location, starting a new career, taking an exam, or buying a house can all cause anxiety.   Ordinary anxiety is a temporary feeling that does not interfere with your daily activities.

If you have an anxiety disorder, you may experience worry all of the time. It's powerful and can be overwhelming at times.

This form of anxiety may force you to abandon activities that you enjoy. It may prohibit you from taking an elevator, crossing the road, or even leaving your home in extreme circumstances. If anxiety isn't managed, it will only get worse.

Let's run through some habits that increase your anxiety. Try to focus on these and push yourself forward! There's plenty of help out there and just know, anxiety is not uncommon.

Insomnia

Lack of sleep is one of the most common habits that cause anxiety.

Some of the most common factors to an unhealthy sleep patter are excessive screen time late at night, spending time in bed on your phone or tablet, or drinking caffeine/alcohol late at night.

Try to avoid some of these common habits. Look to go to bed and wake up at the same time to put your body on a schedule. This will help you reduce anxious symptoms.

Unhealthy Diet

Unhealthy eating habits are another factor that contributes to increased anxiety. Not eating has a direct effect on anxiety levels.

Our blood sugar levels decline when we don't eat, resulting in reduced glucose levels.

In addition, what we eat and how much we eat has such a big impact on our mental health.

Anxiety symptoms can be increased by unbalanced nutrition and a diet high in processed foods.

Inactivity

It has been discovered that sitting all day and not moving around much has a negative impact on one's anxiety levels.

Exercising at least every other day is critical because it releases serotonin and dopamine, the hormones that help to prevent anxiety and sadness.

Even a 15-minute walk can benefit your mind and body tremendously.

Alcohol

We briefly touched on this before, but excessive drinking can deteriorate your mental health. Heavy alcohol use might alter your brain's circuitry, making you more susceptible to anxiety symptoms.

Also, alcohol will throw off your sleeping habits which in turn, causes anxiety. I would never say don't drink, but be cautious of the amount and time you're consuming.

Water Consumption

Many individuals might not recognize it, yet they do not drink enough water on a daily basis.

A variety of bodily problems can occur if you're not properly hydrated. Dehydration can have a negative impact on your mental health.

Dehydration raises your heart rate and can make you dizzy, both of which are indicators of anxiety attacks, so it can make those who are prone to panic attacks even more worried.

Procrastinating

You may be procrastinating because you're anxious, but putting off that stressful task will not make it go away.

The only way to relieve the stress that your to-do list is causing you, is to tackle it one item at a time. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the scope of what you need to accomplish, break down your to-do list into smaller, more achievable activities.

Every time you complete one, your brain releases dopamine, giving you a sense of accomplishment while also combating your anxiety.

Smoking

Cigarettes are a bad habit for a variety of reasons: they increase your cancer risk, wreak havoc on your lungs, and put you at risk for tooth decay. However, the chemicals in cigarettes might have a negative impact on your mental health.

Though many people grab for a cigarette when they are stressed, the soothing impact is just temporary. It's always a struggle to kick this nasty habit, but it will help your overall mental health.
